SCHOOLHOUSE & TREE - watercolor 11 x 14 Strathmore paper. Playing cool against warm, a story unfolds. In passing, we leave our fingerprints on history. The difference we make is seldom understood. This old schoolhouse still retains some of its color and charm. Glowing on a winter day it is still making it presence known. Like an old Vanguard, a tree stands by its old companion as though it is protecting and framing its image in time.

This paper is very receptive and cooperative to washes. Blending the sky, skyline, and foreground went quickly and easily. I drybrushed some color between washes to get subtle broken lines. I drybrushed once nearly dry to get some harder more distinct lines. A rigger brush was handy here. I used a bristle brush from my oil collection to get some harder and varied lines. I was not completely successful getting the look I wanted, but as usual, some happy-accidents took over. I never feel like I am totally the architect in my paintings. Lots of accidents and experiments. I only have myself to please at this time and it allows me a lot more freedom to experiment. No undo key in real media....(unlike digital), but then it brings another kind of suspense to the work. What will happen next? reference - courtesy of morgufile.
