Elora Mill Pastel on paper. Elora Mill by Steve Mac picture reference from IRL. Thank you Steve.
circa 1870 The Elora Mill Inn is perched on the verge of the Grand River (Canada), overlooking tumbling waterfalls.

Soft Pastels and pastel pencils over gouache underpainting.
10x15 inch. Canson Waterolor Cold Press Grain Fin Montval paper.

I finally broke the artist block for 2005 and dug right in to my first pastel. Keeping with my looser style, I found a reference picture in our IRL and felt connected enough to the scene to dig in and paint. This weekend was reserved to do a local plein air, but it is storming here, very hard, and I do not feel as adventerous (yet), as some others (i.e., Larry Seiler). We used to have climate here in Southern California, now I think we have WEATHER

one moment while i catch my breath - becasue you have surely stolen it right away with this beautiful painting.

It is so rich and luminous. I love the refelections on the water, the texture on the buildings and how beatifully you have captured the foliage.

this is certainly a painting to be proud of. Great work - you definitely get my merit point for today! Cori Nichols

Wow. Beautifull job on this one ! I am beginning to believe that we have most of the best talent in the world today right here on WC Aestera

BEautiful, evocative painting! Just conjures up those olde tymes!
Yes, we were just watching your "weather" on the news! Stay in and paint for now!

I really like the loose and friendly style to your work. Very moody yet inviting ..
Great work Tom

Museum quality, IMHO!
That is a scene I would hang in my living room in a heartbeat!
Not sure how to do it, but I give you a merit point, too! Jerry

Jerry,

Excellent painting---it has an "old world" feel about it. Absolutely top notch work.

I'm embarassed: I think some think (see above)I did this piece- I only complimented Paki!

Paki: I discovered I'm 'not qualified yet' to award a merit point, but if I could, it would definitely be a well-deserved one! I menat every word of my compliment.
There's a small, old mill village nearby, with a stone building much like yours. When the warm weather gets here, I'm going to try my hand at it.
I haven't done many landscapes, but this piece has truly inspired me. i think that's about as high praise as I can imagine.
Again, Congratulations! Jerry

Paki, I echo the sentiments already expressed here! This is a serene and beautifully painted work worthy of the old masters. Well done!

Indeed this has an old masters feel to it. It is beautiful. I like the "soft" feel to it. You artfully did not overwork the picture. TurboCat

i echo the words of the others on this. such a lovely feel to it. and i agree with you on how old charming places have more to them than the new stuff, its just cold and 'useful'. i love that this LOOK like pastel, you made good use of the meduim on this piece. thanks for sharing it.

Paki this is just too beautiful for words!!!
It truly has the look of a museum piece, and if your brother should turn it down (can you even imagine such an absurd thought????) we will all be standing in line to take his place!!!

You wouldn't happen to have a wip of this piece or consider doing a lesson on how you achieved this breathtaking beauty????

Congrats on a gorgeous piece of work!!!
